Shortly after five in the evening, the residents of a five-story house in Ventspils, on Inženieru street, had to leave their homes immediately. Zinaida, a resident of the fourth floor, found out that there was a fire in the house and that the situation was serious, when she heard the sounds of emergency fire engines in the courtyard.

“I smelled smoke. Signaling. I opened the door. Firemen were already standing in front of the door. Asked us all to go out. They extinguished there, the fortieth apartment on the fifth floor,” says the woman.

The residents say that the only resident of the apartment was a quiet senior who rented the apartment, sometimes his relatives visited him, but he himself rarely came out in the stairwell, therefore, the people who were contacted about the causes that could have caused the fire accident told the program “Degpunktā” only what they heard.

“As if a match was dropped. Well, it didn’t go all the way, it was thrown. Clear. I haven’t heard anything more,” says the resident of the house.

The biggest concern of the firefighters was to save the life of the owner of the apartment.

Jānis Senkāns, the commander of the Ventspils section of the Kurzeme regional administration of the VUGD, informs that household goods burned in an area of 20 square meters.

Rescuers fought the flames for about two hours until the fire was extinguished. The law enforcement officers have started to explain the reasons for the fire. Careless handling of an open flame near the gas stove may be to blame.
