From the beginning of the rain late on Tuesday evening until 3 pm on Wednesday afternoon, the amount of precipitation in Daugavpils reached 40.4 millimeters or 117% of the monthly norm, according to the data of the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology and Meteorology.
There was a thunderstorm in Daugavpils both at midnight and in the early morning. Also in other places in Latgale and Vidzeme there were thunder showers at night and in the morning.
In the afternoon, the rain has changed to snow in many places, the precipitation is still intense in places in the eastern part of the country.
On Wednesday until 15:00, the amount of precipitation in Jēkabpilis reached 24.6 millimeters or 66% of the April norm, in Skriveri – 25.3 millimeters or 62% of the monthly norm at this observation station, in Zosēni – 28 millimeters or 67%. Elsewhere, less rainfall was recorded.
The speed of the north wind gusts in many places on the coast, including the capital, has increased to 16-19 meters per second.
It has already been reported that on the night of Thursday, the snow will stop in Latvia and the wind will also become slower, the air temperature will drop to 0..-5 degrees in the morning. Roads will be snowy and slippery in many places.
Due to the precipitation, the water level in the rivers will rise rapidly in the coming days, flooding of the lowest places is possible, hydrologists predict.
