The Zemgale planning region has started implementing three new projects in the field of tourism this year. It is planned that as a result of the implementation of the project, the lost and no longer visible cultural and historical heritage will be developed – by introducing interactive and digitally accessible tourism products, the role of military heritage in tourism will be increased and water tourism will be promoted on the Latvian-Lithuanian border.

All projects have been implemented in the Interreg VI-A Latvian-Lithuanian cross-border cooperation program for 2021-2027. The aim of the program is to strengthen cooperation between Latvian and Lithuanian regions in several thematic areas, including tourism. The cooperation and activities initiated in the new projects will be implemented both in the municipalities of the Zemgale planning region and in the border municipalities of Latgale, as well as in the municipalities and institutions of northern Lithuania.

  • Digitally accessible and attractive tourism destinations of the lost cultural heritage in Zemgale and Northern Lithuania, or “Reclaimed history” is a project that will use modern technologies to offer a unique experience to tourists and promote the recognition of the rich lost and no longer visible cultural and historical heritage. Within the framework of the project, 20 objects were supported, including Koknese castle ruins and park, Gārsene castle, Čerkesas-Besparņi and Rokiškiu manor and its surroundings, and other objects in Bauska, Akmene and Jelgava counties. It is planned to improve and strengthen the digital skills and competences of the tourism industry by organizing trainings and seminars online and in person, as well as to promote the recognition of new tourism products and routes with a common route map, for opening events of newly introduced digital solutions, joint tour competition and publicity. • Expansion of the Baltic military heritage tourism product in Lithuania and Southern Latvia, or “Military Heritage II” is a project based on the idea of reflecting the common history of the Baltic states through the prism of military heritage. The project partners want to expand the territorial coverage of the Baltic military heritage tourism offer, including objects from Southern Latvia and Lithuania, thus revealing the full historical narrative. The aim of the project is to integrate around 300 military heritage sites into a tourism product, to create military heritage tourism routes and to add significant new sites to the common web platform www.militaryheritagetourism.info. Such a project has already been implemented in cooperation with Estonian partners. Therefore, upon completion of the new project, the entire territory of the Baltic States will be identified and a wide information collection of military heritage will be available to those interested. • Promotion of sustainable water tourism in the Lithuanian-Latvian border region, involving local entrepreneurs and communities, or “WaterTour” is a project that aims to promote the principles of sustainable water tourism. The project partners will create a comprehensive tourist route, which will include not only the infrastructure necessary for tourism, but also attractions, services necessary for travelers and tourist information centers. Responding to the growing post-pandemic demand for nature trips and customized routes, the project partners will improve 12 water tourism sites: docks, recreation areas, mobile river piers, cable ferry, etc. , in Lake Aiseta, as well as in the Zemgale region (Latvia), the Aukštaitija region (Lithuania), including Labanoras, Gražutes, Anīkšči regional parks and Biržu district.
