Latvian students have highlighted the student fare discounts they won in Riga’s public transport for the 2023 event, LETA agency learned from the Latvian Student Union (LSA).

LSA “Year Award 2023” awarded laureates in 16 nominations, determined by the voting results of students, student self-governments, as well as the board of LSA and the commission of external experts.

Award “Student case – straight and hard!” presented the event, which has been followed by a significant, positive turning point in the life of all students and universities. This time it was awarded for the student fare discounts won last year in Riga’s public transport. Students can buy a monthly ticket, which previously cost 15 euros, for 12 euros.

Meanwhile, the title of “Case of the Year” was won by the protracted process of accepting the new doctoral model – its concept was approved by the government on June 16, 2020, but the Saeima approved it in the final reading only on March 14 of this year.

The evaluation questionnaire and report of the state unified bar exam became the “Investment of the year in the promotion of academic life”. In the questionnaire, students had the opportunity to evaluate both parts of the exam and the exam as a whole. Based on the data provided in the questionnaire, a LSA report was developed with recommendations to the Ministry of Justice and the examination commission, after which the content of the examination was improved.

The “Investment of the year in the promotion of social life” award went to the discussion series “Safe space” implemented by the Student Council of Daugavpils University. Last year, the Daugavpils University Student Council (DU SP) expressed a public position on students belonging to the LGBT community, which was followed by the creation of a cycle of discussions on mental health, emotional violence and the LGBT community.

On the other hand, the “Project of the Year” award was won by the “International Student Conference “Health and Social sciences” 2023″ organized by RSU students, which was the largest student scientific conference of the year in the Baltic States. After three years of hybrid format, the conference gathered around 2500 participants and visitors from 25 different countries of the world.

The awards “Student Self-Government of the Year” and “Most Socially Responsible Self-Government of the Year” were received by the RSU Student Council, which during the year promoted the well-being of students by improving the academic, social, cultural and scientific dimensions, as well as being actively involved in LSA working groups, council meetings and congresses.

Awards were also given in such nominations as “Student of the Year”, “Young Scientist of the Year”, “Student-Expert of the Year”, “Visual Material of the Year”, “Councillor of the Year”, “Activist of the Year”, “Growth of the Year”, as well as “Year old friend” and “Student Supporter of the Year”.

The LSA annual award is an award ceremony during which the brightest student representatives, events and projects of the past year are honored, which are related to higher education policy in general, the developments of each university, the daily life of student self-government and the life of every student in Latvia.
