Strengthening cooperation in multilateral formats is discussed at consultations in Greece – Politics

On March 28, 2024, Ambassador of Special Tasks for Global and Multilateral Affairs Andrejs Pildegovičs and Latvian Ambassador to Greece Ieva Briede participated in political consultations at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where they met with Maria Theofili, Director General of International Organizations and International Security and Cooperation and the Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs envoy for Greece’s candidacy in the UN Security Council.

During the consultations, there was a fruitful exchange of views on a wide range of topics, including international law, the Future of the UN, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, peacekeeping operations, cyber security, as well as climate change. Special attention was paid to ongoing international crises and conflicts. A. Pildegovičs introduced his Greek colleagues to the campaign aspects of Latvia’s candidacy in the 2025 UN Security Council elections, and also heard the experience gained during the lobbying campaign for Greece’s candidacy in the UN Security Council.

The discussions emphasized the common values ​​and interests of the two countries, including adherence to the principles of the UN Charter and the promotion of multilateral cooperation.

The consultations provided an opportunity for Latvian and Greek officials to discuss opportunities for closer cooperation in the UN and other multilateral formats in order to contribute to solving global problems and promote the stability of the rules-based international order.
