The guide provides a definition of inclusive language and highlights the benefits of such communication.

Previously, only the brochure “Inclusive communication in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union” prepared by the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union in 2018 has been published in Latvian.

“Respectful communication is an increasingly urgent issue, and we are better able to notice at what moment prejudices and stereotypes creep into our language or that of others. We learn to include and not discriminate. It is no longer an issue we ignore,” says linguist Aiga Veckalne, author of the guide.

The Inclusive Language Guide includes:

  • definition of inclusive or respectful communication;
  • characteristics most likely to be stigmatized (eg age, disability, ethnicity);
  • different examples of language use that should be avoided by indicating an inclusive alternative;
  • tips on how to be inclusive;
  • information accessibility recommendations;
  • useful links for further information.

“By writing and speaking inclusively, we create an environment where everyone feels included, welcomed and respected, address a wider audience, reduce the feeling of discrimination or threat, create a positive image of the organization, promote equality and justice and develop sustainably,” adds Aiga Veckalne.

The Inclusive Language Guide can be downloaded for free from the website.
