Indie folk In its music, the association “Viedais Phonographs” takes a fresh look at the intelligent heritage of our nation – folk songs. It is there, and not in modern smart devices, that we can still gain basic knowledge of life and search for the real Latvian cultural code, which is why the name of the duo was also invented ironically for both musicians.

The beginnings of “Viedā Phonographa” can be traced back to 2019, when the musician of the “Ducele” group, Arnis Veisbārd, was presented with a folklore research manuscript in which ancient Latvian deities were venerated. What I read in the research was consistent with Arni’s own life experience and accumulated life knowledge. The draft of the concert program “Viedais Phonographs” was made, and the duo has already performed several successful concerts, so now it will be the turn of the debut album as well.

The arrangements and manner of performance of the songs are mostly based on the bohemian understanding of the “flower child” era of the songwriter Arni Veisbäržs about a natural, acoustic sound and the modern musical experience of the member of the rock band “Dzelzs vilks” Kārlis Alviķas.

“Every day, in the twists and turns of the subconscious and consciousness and in the time reference system, we move in the past, which is both memory and accumulated wisdom,” Arnis Veisbárdis philosophizes about the new song program. “At the same time, with every breath, word and movement, we are already in the future, because we never stop dreaming, hoping and also loving!”

“We offer to teleport on a journey of memories of the past and dreams of the future, conjuring up sonorous scenes in which Latvian folk traditions and songs slightly adapted to today are merged with self-composed, but seemingly appropriate melodies,” adds Kārlis Alviķis.

Vocalist and guitarist Arnis Veisbärdis and backing singer and guitarist Kārlis Alviķis were joined in the recording of the album by vocalist Emīlija Fricsone, vocalist and violinist Inga Zeile, accordionist Rolands Zelčs, double bass player Andris Alviķis and percussionist Artis Orubs. The album was created in “Siguldas sound studio”, which is also the album’s publisher. The recording, mixing and production process was carried out by Kārlis Alviķis, and the master version was created by Reinis Kārklinņš.

The new, summery single “Tur aiz upes meitas dzied’i” is already available on the best Latvian radio stations and music streaming services, where from June 5 you can also listen to the debut album “Viedais phonograffs”. It will also be available for purchase in CD format, and on the same date, visitors to the VEF quarter promenade festival “Start Over” will be the first to purchase it, because then at 19.00 there will be a presentation concert of the debut album “Viedā Phonographa”. This will also be followed by the performance of the group “Other boys”.
