Neofolk group “Jumis” has released a new song and video called “Aiju, aiju”. Until now, “Aiju, aiju” could be heard in the group’s concert programs.[pirm]Säkums” in the repertoire, but now it has reached listeners on streaming platforms.
The title of the song was inspired by the lyrics of the song, at the beginning of which these two words appear – aiju, aiju. “Aiju, aiju – it is usually associated with a child’s swaddling, but this is not a lullaby in its classical sense. We all need someone in our everyday life, in whose presence we can feel as warm as a mother’s swaddling, even for a moment,” says group member Lauma Matule about the name.
The founder of the group and the author of the song, Einārs Jaunbrālis, says: “This song is the realization of the basic idea of my “Yumja” music of the moment, where baroque musical language, instrumental, harmonic, melody with the lyrics of a Latvian folk song are interwoven. This musical bouquet uses folk instruments – the accordion, kokle, but in the playing of the instruments and in the singing, you can hear signs of academicism with a sufficiently complex harmony.” Einars also mentions that thanks to the professionalism of the band members – Uģas Roze’s extensive vocal skills and Lauma Matule’s virtuoso kokle playing – it is possible to create and play this style of music.
