According to a new report by Mishaal Rahman in Android Authority, Android 15 will allow users to force apps to dim. In other words, you’ll be able to force dark mode on apps that don’t support it.

Android 15 will apparently let you force apps to go into dark mode, or use dark mode

A lot of people seem to prefer dark mode these days. Google is introducing system-wide dark mode support in Android 10. These days, most of the apps you have installed on your phone have a dark mode option.

However, not everyone does. This new feature, which is expected to be discontinued in Android 15, will keep these apps blacked out until… if you choose to use it. These changes were spotted in Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 that shipped in January.

Google did a good job of hiding a new “Make all apps dark” switch. It was hidden under Settings -> Accessibility -> Color & Motion. This toggle wasn’t even visible when the update arrived, and it still isn’t.

This feature is different from the “ignore forced dark” option.

At first, it seems very similar to the “ignore force dark” switch available in developer options. It’s better though. Mishal Rahman realized that this works in more apps than the “ignore force dark” option, which is nice to hear. The “Ignore Force Dark” option failed us several times, so it will be interesting to test this new one.

The “Ignore Forced Dark” feature is intended for use by developers anyway. It is intended as a “feature for developers to quickly implement a dark theme by explicitly setting the DayNight theme”. Obviously, this works differently than the “Make all apps dark” option.

The existing option also tends to confuse images in some cases as it causes color inversion. The new option does not, the source confirms. The thing is, it’s not the same, it’s better.

Here’s what happens when this option is activated

Mishaal also provided several samples of how this option works. In the gallery below, you’ll find a bunch of images of apps that don’t offer dark mode by default, but were forced to get it thanks to this new option.

This feature could be implemented in Android 15 Beta 2, which is expected to arrive during Google I/O next month.
