On April 30 of this year, the State Security Service (VDD) detained a person who regularly expressed messages and appeals in support of Russian aggression and interests in videos published on the video sharing site “TikTok”.

In his video talks, in addition to efforts to provoke hatred against Latvians and Ukrainians, the man expressed threats against representatives of such nationalities, as well as other supporters of Ukraine, to use violent methods.

The criminal process against the person was started on March 26 of this year in accordance with the second part of Article 74.1 and the second part of Article 78 of the Criminal Law, namely for justifying crimes against peace and war crimes, as well as for actions aimed at inciting national and ethnic hatred or discord.

By analyzing the content published on the person’s “TikTok” account, the VDD found that the person, with his statements, which are available to an unlimited number of people, systematically and purposefully justifies the crimes of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, as well as condemns the support provided by Latvia to Ukraine.

The suspect has been remanded in custody as a security measure. Currently, the VDD continues the investigation and will provide additional information about its progress according to the progress of the criminal process.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Security Service has initiated 48 criminal proceedings against 55 persons for public statements in support of Russian aggression and interests. In addition, since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Security Service has conducted preventive discussions with more than a thousand persons in connection with comments on the Internet, which are aimed at justifying Russian aggression and contain signs of hate speech, warning of the expected criminal liability in case of criminal offenses.
