In an interview with “Allure” published on Monday, the Colombian pop singer shared a not so bright view of Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed film “Barbie”.
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt they were being undermined,” she said, referring to sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, from her ex-boyfriend Gerard Pique. “And I kind of agree,” Shakira adds.
The three-time Grammy winner said she wants her sons to “feel strong [vienlaikus] respecting women’, which she felt was not portrayed enough in ‘Barbie’. “I love pop culture when it tries to empower women without robbing men of being men,” Shakira said.
“I believe in giving women all the tools and confidence that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose. We complement each other and this bond should not be lost.”
Last July, “Barbie” hit the screens to critical acclaim and was a huge hit, grossing over one billion dollars worldwide. The film also received a total of eight Academy Award nominations.
Despite the accolades received by “Barbie”, several critical voices have also appeared.
