Kate Middleton shocked the world when she announced that she had cancer. How exactly is the Princess of Wales currently being treated and what awaits the wife of the British heir to the throne, writes the Daily Mail material.

In an emotional statement filmed in Windsor, Kate said her medical team had recommended she undergo preventative chemotherapy. She said she was in the “early stages of treatment,” which began in late February.

Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to target tumors, and is typically used to treat cancer directly or to shrink a tumor in preparation for surgery, according to reporters who spoke to oncology doctors. Also in Kate’s case, chemotherapy can be used as a preventative treatment in the hope of stopping the cancer from spreading or reducing the chance of the cancer coming back.

Prophylactic chemotherapy is most often carried out in the form of intravenous drops or tablets, the active ingredients of which are then transferred throughout the body through the bloodstream. Depending on the type, chemotherapy can be done both in the hospital and at home.

There are more than 100 types of chemotherapy drugs. They all work the same way: circulating in the blood, they stop cancer cells from multiplying anywhere in the body, killing them before they have a chance to divide. It prevents cancer cells from growing and spreading in the body.
