Helen’s seemingly mundane life holds a dark and dangerous truth – her father is the infamous Swamp King – a man who kept her and her mother captive in the wild for years.
When her father escapes from prison, Helena must come face to face with her past. Knowing that he will drive her and her family into his arms, Helen must find the strength to face her demons and stay one step ahead of the man who taught her everything she knows about surviving in the great outdoors.
The film “Daughter of the Swamp King” is based on the 2017 bestseller by author Karen Dionne, whose title is borrowed from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
The film’s story begins in a remote river valley in Michigan about 20 years ago. Jacob teaches his ten-year-old daughter Helen (Brooklyn Prince) to hunt. The father-daughter relationship is intense but cold. When Helen refuses to shoot a hungry wolf lurking near the family cabin, she receives a lesson in the dark side of nature. “The wolf is not merciful,” Jacob tells her, “only a desire to live another day.”

After Jacob is arrested – the poster for David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive suggests that the arrest takes place around 2001 – the film jumps to the present day, where we see a grown-up Helen. She hides not only most of her childhood tattoos, but also her past.
Everything seems fine until Jacob escapes from prison. Ridley and Mendelsohn, both veterans of the “Star Wars” franchise, are now on opposite sides of the battle between good and evil.
The film is directed by Neil Berger (“The Others” (“Divergent”)), written by Ella Smith and Mars L. Smith.
