The US has always sided with Israel, but Rafah is President Joe Biden’s red line. Last week, without much fanfare, arms shipments to Israel were halted in part because the White House feared they would be used to attack Rafah. But Biden publicly warned for the first time that if Israeli forces enter Rafah, US arms deliveries will be completely stopped.
It does not seem that Israel has been deterred by these threats.

In Washington, despite Biden’s statements, rather restrained communication continues. It continues to emphasize that the US supports Israel and that the dispute is only about Rafah. That’s the red line. But it is unclear what the consequences will be if the Netanyahu government passes it.

We have offered a number of other political solutions that they can choose from, which we believe would achieve the goal of eliminating Hamas still in Rafah without endangering the civilian population.
