In the second round of the presidential election, Gordana Siļanovska-Davkova, the candidate supported by the opposition, won with the support of about 65% of the voters. The right-wing nationalist party could also have won more than 43% of the votes in the parliamentary elections, which would give it an upper hand in the parliament.

Meanwhile, political experts warn that such a balance of power could affect the Balkan country’s path to the European Union, as well as complicate relations with neighboring countries Greece and Bulgaria. During the pre-election campaign, the leader of the winning party and the most realistic contender for the post of prime minister, Hristijans Mickoskis, refused to recognize the new name of the country, which was confirmed in the agreement concluded in 2018 with Greece.

He also promises to take a hard line in the dispute with Bulgaria over language and history. Because of this, Sofia has been blocking North Macedonia’s accession negotiations to the European Union for two years.

However, Mickoski might have to seek the support of Albanian party deputies in the process of forming the cabinet.
