Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that the escape of Polish judge Tomasz Schmitt, who had access to classified information, to Belarus is a sign of treason.
The Belarusian propaganda agency “Belta” reported on Monday that Shmits applied for asylum in Belarus.
“This is a person who has signs of treason. Everything indicates that he could be a very valuable source for foreign services,” said the Polish prime minister.
Tusk called for Schmitt’s legal immunity to be revoked and pointed out that the judge’s ties to Belarus have only lasted a few months.
After Schmidt fled to Belarus, the prosecutor’s office in Warsaw opened a case against the judge on suspicion of espionage.
Among other things, Schmitt has handled cases related to security clearances for classified information affecting NATO, the European Union and the European Space Agency, according to the media.
Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) has already started an investigation into the extent to which the judge had access to classified information.
