Berlin’s Senator for Economy, Energy and Entrepreneurship, Franciska Giffey, was slightly injured in the attack that took place on Tuesday afternoon in the library of the Rudov neighborhood.
A man unexpectedly hit Giffeja from behind with a bag containing hard objects, the police and the prosecutor’s office of the German capital report.
Giffey, who represents the Social Democrats (SPD) and previously served as mayor of Berlin, was briefly hospitalized after the attack.
The attacker’s motives are still unknown.
Recently, several attacks have taken place in Germany on politicians and party activists who have engaged in campaigning before the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections.
MEP Matthias Eke, who also represents the SPD, was beaten up in Dresden on Friday.
A few minutes later, the same group of four attacked a Green campaigner who was putting up the party’s pre-election posters.
On the other hand, on Tuesday afternoon, a man and a woman attacked another green politician in Dresden, who also put up posters.
The attackers also tore down two posters.
On Tuesday, the countries’ interior ministers agreed that tougher penalties are needed for violent attacks on politicians.
