Onishchevits emphasized to the publication “Ukrinform” that currently NATO cannot “extend its security umbrella over western Ukraine.”

“But now it is necessary to make sure that the Polish air defense systems from the territory of our country shoot down those missiles that can cross the Polish airspace through Ukraine. However, in that case, Poland must be fully familiar with the Ukrainian airspace, that is, it must collect information from Ukrainian radars and other means , which Poland doesn’t have now,” said Onishkiewicz.

A missile launched by the Polish air defense system can be shot down at any time before it lands. The decision to shoot down the missiles flying in the direction of Poland over the territory of Ukraine may be taken, but resistance from some NATO allies must be expected, as they must agree to the use of the allies’ air defense systems.

The expert does not rule out that over time, NATO could decide to fully protect the skies over western Ukraine, but it will take “a little time.” Perhaps it could be adopted during the NATO summit in July 2024.

The summit will be held in Washington, USA.
