Russian nightmare in Turkey: Turks kick Russian citizens off planes and prevent them from flying to other countries

About 1,000 Russians have not been able to leave Turkey for Latin America in recent months. Problems arose with “Turkish Airlines” flights. One of the victims said that she and 30 other Russians were not allowed on the plane, which was supposed to fly from Istanbul to Cancun, according to The Moscow Times.

According to the tourist, she had tickets, a visa and an invitation from a friend who lives in Mexico. She had previously flown to Cancun in 2022 and had not encountered any problems. The passport also contained visas to the EU and the USA, which had expired. Despite this, she was denied a flight.

A family from Moscow found themselves in a similar situation. The man flew to Mexico on vacation with his wife, two children and a dog. They had all possible documents with them: hotel reservation, insurance and visa. However, in Istanbul, only one German national was allowed to board a Turkish Airlines flight bound for Cancun. Muscovites lost more than a million rubles (approximately 10,117 euros) due to the interrupted trip.

The same thing happened on April 8 to three more Russian women who had planned to go on vacation to Mexico via Istanbul. The girls had paid for round trip tickets and booked hotels.

However, they were not allowed to board the plane at the check-in point at the Turkish airport when making a transfer. Turkish Airlines explained that since the women had not previously “travelled to influential countries such as America, Canada or England” or to Mexico itself, they could not fly to the country “according to the Mexican government’s regulations”.

Russians are complaining en masse about Turkish Airlines and the travel website Tripadvisor. People write that they were denied flights on the pretext that they did not have new US or Schengen visas in their passports. At the same time, money for tickets is not refunded.

According to Artur Muradyan, vice-president of the Russian Association of Tour Operators, the Turkish airline is dealing with the Russians in fear of the claims of the United States, which considers Mexico to be the main channel of illegal migration.
