In the final reading, the Saeima today adopted amendments to the Food Circulation Monitoring Law, which requires traders to indicate the country of production of the product at the point of sale of food – with a flag symbol or in writing.

On the other hand, retail companies will have to provide information about products manufactured in Russia and Belarus only in writing at the point of sale. The deputies justified this with the desire not to popularize the aggressor countries with the flags of the mentioned countries.

The Cabinet of Ministers will determine the criteria for identifying the country in which the product was produced, for the design and placement of the requirements. Also, exceptions will be determined when placing signs is not mandatory.

According to the definition prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, the country of food production is the country in which the food is obtained, or the country in which activities have been carried out with the product that significantly change the original product.

A warning or a fine of up to 250 euros will be applied to a natural person, and up to 1,000 euros to a legal person, for not specifying information about the country of manufacture of the food product.
