According to what is written in the Gospels, on this day Jesus came before the court of the Roman and Jewish Pharisees, who decided to put him to death by nailing him to the cross. Therefore, the Christian world celebrates Good Friday, or the Day of the Cross of Christ.

Commemorating Christ’s journey with the cross on his shoulders to the place of execution, many congregations go on symbolic processions of the cross on this day, reflecting on the events of his last hours before his death. On our side, for example in Skaistkalne today, March 29, at 12 congregation and priest Andrejs Mediņš are organizing a procession through the streets of Skaistkalne, while at 17 – in Kurmene procession of the cross in the park.

In the churches on this day, the message is heard about how the son of God was crucified and died for the sins of the world. On this day, the Lord’s Supper is not usually celebrated and the songs are sung without accompaniment.

Church altars are also usually empty, and the candles symbolizing the living Christ are often blown out. They are rekindled on Easter night from the Easter fire. The liturgical color on Good Friday is black or purple – it symbolizes death, darkness and destruction.

Good Friday is the day of Christ’s death and at the same time the day of atonement for the sins of mankind. On this day, the Church reads the Gospel about the condemnation of Christ and prays for everyone – believers and unbelievers.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Good Friday is the only day of the year when priests do not celebrate Holy Mass, and believers must observe strict fasting on this day.
