Although in Lithuania and Estonia the VAT on medicines is a few percent lower than in Latvia, the final price of medicines is at least 20-30% lower than in Latvia, which shows that the VAT reduction will not have the desired effect for our buyers. Continuing the work on expanding the scope of reimbursed medicines, the Minister of Health hopes that the prices of medicines will decrease in the fall.
Negotiations are currently underway with pharmacies and drug wholesalers on a mark-up model that would determine a fixed profit. Customers would also be charged €0.75 for the prescription drug dispensing service. Abu Meri says that by making the change, the customers’ medicine bill should decrease by 15-20%. Prices would decrease not only for prescription drugs that are not reimbursed, but the payment could also decrease for drugs reimbursed by the state.
