The Klaipėda Police Department reported that around 00:45 on Thursday night, a “Volkswagen” car drove off the drawbridge and fell into the river on Pilies Street. A 30-year-old man died in the accident, whose body was found by divers who arrived at the accident site.
“On arrival, the car was not visible in the water, when the divers dived, they saw that it had turned over on its roof and a human body was visible on the driver’s side. Divers opened the car underwater, pulled out the drowned person, and also marked the place where the drowned car is located,” Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Department representative Edīte Zdanevičiene told BNS. It is planned to lift the car out of the water on Thursday, during the day.
The information about the road traffic accident was transferred to the US Embassy in Lithuania, which confirmed that the deceased is a US citizen. However, the embassy does not provide further comments, explaining it as showing respect to the family and relatives of the deceased.
On the other hand, according to eyewitnesses, the car had a Latvian license plate. Lithuanian public media LRT quotes agency BNS as saying that the deceased had arrived in Klaipeda in a rented car and stayed at a hotel in the city.
As “tv3.lv” found out, the Ministry of Defense of Latvia and the National Armed Forces currently have no information about such an accident.
The circumstances of the incident are still being explained. At first there were reports that the investigation would be conducted by the police, but later it was taken over by the Military Police. It is also known that a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the accident.
