The number of drivers who engage in other things behind the wheel has increased – 39% tend to talk on the phone without using the hands-free system, 40% drink coffee, and 27% indicate that they also tend to abstain while driving, according to the “Carlsberg 0.0 Responsible Driving Index ” data.

10% of drivers indicate that they tend to write messages on the phone while driving, while 3% tend to read news or research social media news.

“For several years in a row, we see that the number of drivers who “sin” at the wheel with various parallel things continues to grow, but driving a car requires undivided attention. A phone without a hands-free system or eating while driving can be as dangerous as drinking alcohol, side activities can also lead to dangerous situations and serious consequences,” says Jānis Vanks, director of the Safe Driving School.

Analyzing the responses between male and female respondents, it can be seen that men deal with other things at the wheel much more often, for example, 40% of men and 37% of women talk on the phone without a hands-free system while driving, 11% of men and 9% of women write news, but 30% of men and 23% of women eat while driving. This trend was observed in previous years as well.

The answers in different age groups show that older drivers are the most aware – more than half (53%) of drivers over 60 concentrate only on the road behind the wheel. In the age group from 40 to 49 years, almost half (48%) state that they tend to talk on the phone while driving, without using the hands-free system, while 36% in the age group from 30 to 39 years admit that they tend to eat while driving. The youngest drivers (aged 18-29) are most likely to be texting on their phone (19%), drinking coffee (50%) or reading social media updates (7%).
