Spain’s socialist leader Sanchez believes his wife is being targeted by a campaign of persecution organized by right-wing forces.

“If we believe that politics means attacking innocent people, it’s not worth it. No honor justifies the suffering inflicted on the people we love the most,” Sanchez said.

Gomez was sued by a far-right organization that claimed Sanchez’s wife used her position to influence business deals.

The complainants said it was based on publications in media closely linked to the opposition conservative People’s Party and the far-right party Vox. On the other hand, the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office believes that such accusations are unfounded.

The left calls for Sanchez to stay in office

The Spanish press reported that the investigation is related to Gomez’s alleged ties to the Spanish tourism company Globalia, which in turn owns Air Europa.

The prime minister’s wife met twice with the CEO of Globalia, Javier Hidalgo, when the airline was negotiating with the government to receive support after the crisis in air transportation caused by the “Covid-19” pandemic.

In 2020, the Sanchez government decided to allocate 475 million euros to rescue “Air Europa”.

Socialist leader Sanchez has been the head of the Spanish government since 2018.

Demonstrations by supporters of the Socialist Party took place in Spanish cities over the weekend, calling on Sanchez to stay in office to prevent far-right forces from coming to power. Sanchez says that this support was one of the reasons that convinced him to stay in office.
