Scania wins the Green Truck title of the world’s most efficient truck

--

Every year, all European truck manufacturers are invited to participate in the comparative test of the Green Truck Award. It is organized by two German transport industry magazines to determine the most efficient regional truck.

Apart from a “small setback” in 2023 when Scania finished second, the Södertelje-based manufacturer has won the Green Truck title in seven of the last eight tests. In fact, since the competition started in 2011, Scania has won nine out of fourteen tests, and that’s still impressive!

“Scania participates in many press tests in Europe, but the Green Truck Award focuses exactly on what is an indisputable basic requirement in our industry – the most efficient transport possible,” says Stefan Dorski, Senior Vice President and Head of Scania Trucks. “Our Super powertrain was introduced in 2021 and raised the bar in the market with an 8% improvement in fuel consumption. This achievement now significantly helps our customers in their daily work.”

The annual Green Truck test is organized by the magazines Trucker and VerkehrsRundschau. It has been held since 2011 and has taken place 14 times. So far, Scania has won nine (!) victories, four 2nd places and one 5th place (in the very first year). No other brand can boast of such achievements.

“Oh, that 5th place – it happened long before I took this position,” says Stefans Dorskis with a smile. “On a serious note, we at Scania are extremely happy to have reclaimed the title of the world’s most efficient regional truck. Lower fuel consumption means our truck is successfully reducing CO2 emissions, which is extremely important as much of the world’s transport still relies on internal combustion engines.”

The Green Truck test takes place on various roads (mainly highways) around Munich. It is closely monitored by the organizers and representatives of the manufacturers involved in the tests. A reference truck is always used to compensate for the effect of changing conditions such as headwind, rain and temperature.

The best in the test is determined using a well-thought-out formula that takes into account all important aspects of transport efficiency and sustainability: fuel consumption, average speed, the amount of AdBlue additive consumed and the weight of the truck (the lighter the better).

If you take a closer look at the results obtained by the Green Truck formula, you have to admit that Scania’s results really stand out: in a 100 km distance, the fuel economy compared to the second place winner is an average of 0.41 liters. As a regional truck drives around 150,000 km every year, Scania cars save 600+ liters more per year than the nearest competitor. The Scania tractor unit weighing 7,040 kg was also the lightest truck and achieved the highest average speed of 79.70 km/h. In May of last year, Scania updated the CCAP (cruise control with route feasibility study) system, which is also believed to have led to such a decisive advantage in this test.
