Ukrainian army commander Oleksandr Sirskyi warned on Sunday, April 28, of a worsening situation on the frontline, with Ukrainian forces withdrawing from their positions in eastern Donetsk due to an increase in Russian attacks, as Russia tries to use its advantage before the arrival of US weapons, the British broadcaster BBC reports.

Despite a recent agreement on $61 billion in military aid, new US weapons have yet to reach the front lines in Ukraine. The troops are still short of ammunition, personnel and anti-aircraft defenses.

“The situation at the front has worsened,” Sirskis said in a Telegram post, adding that

Moscow has achieved “tactical success in some sectors”.

General Sirsky confirmed that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from positions in the Donetsk region that were part of a defensive line established after Russia captured Avdiyivka in February. New defensive lines have been established as the fighting centers around the reach of Chasivyar, a Kievan-held stronghold, and further west.

Rested Ukrainian forces are replacing units that have suffered losses in these areas.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said earlier on Sunday that its troops had captured the village of Novobakhmutivka, about 10 km north of Avdiyivka.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced that it would “urgently” send Patriot air defense missiles and artillery ammunition to Ukraine as part of the new military aid.

From February 2022 to January 2024, the United States has granted Ukraine more than 40 billion US dollars in military aid, according to the data of the German research organization “Kiel Institute”.
