At the CATL Auto China 2024 exhibition, the Chinese company presented the new production-ready LFP battery, which will allow the electric car to travel more than 1,000 kilometers without additional charging.
It’s no secret that along with the high price, one of the factors holding people back from making the switch to electric vehicles is their short range on a single charge. The range of 200, 300 and 400 kilometers, which in real conditions often does not even reach as much as presented in the technical documentation, does not appeal to the buyer, but cars with long-range batteries for 800 and more kilometers for 100 and more thousands of euros are not in the pocket of everyone.
CATL is the largest battery manufacturer in the world, so there is no reason not to believe their announcement at the Beijing Auto Show that the company has “succeeded in a significant breakthrough”. According to a company spokesperson, CATL has developed a new Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery which is the first of its kind to provide a range of over 1,000 kilometers. The production of LFP batteries is slightly more environmentally friendly than the production of lithium-ion batteries, which are mainly used in electric cars, and is also cheaper due to more readily available raw materials.
The new battery is a product of the Shenxing family known as Shenxing Plus. The normal Shenxing battery provides a range of 700 km, it is already installed in four models, and by the end of 2024 another 50 will use it. When CATL will introduce the new Shenxing Plus battery in one of the series electric cars is still unknown.
