CEOs of several leading technology companies are joining the US government’s Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Council. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai are some of these technology leaders. A newly formed federal advisory board will focus on the safe use of AI in the United States’ critical infrastructure.

The AI Council will advise the government on how to safely deploy AI in critical infrastructure

The newly formed Federal Artificial Intelligence Council will work with and advise the Department of Homeland Security. Their main focus will be on the secure deployment of artificial intelligence in the country’s critical infrastructure. They will create security systems to protect the economy, medical care and other key industries from any threat posed by AI. In addition, the council will prevent potential harm from the use of artificial intelligence in the power grid and transport.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is also one of two dozen technology and business leaders joining the federal AI Security Council. Delta Air Line CEO Ed Bastian and Northrop Grumman’s Kathy Warden have also been confirmed as board members. The Wall Street Journal reports that the federal AI council will also include academics and civil rights leaders.

The Biden administration announced a federal AI safety board last year

The Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board, or AISSB, was announced by the Biden administration last year. It is part of the government’s efforts to protect various aspects of critical infrastructure from AI threats. It requires the creators of the most powerful AI systems, such as OpenAI, to share their security results, apart from other important information.

These companies must submit these results before the AI model is made available to the public. This helps reduce the rate at which developers release half-baked and potentially problematic machine learning products. The Wall Street Journal adds that members of the Federal Artificial Intelligence Security Council will hold their first meeting in May. In addition, they are expected to hold meetings every quarter of the year.
