Students will be able to refuse to learn Russian. Such amendments to the law will be considered in the last reading of the Saeima tomorrow. If young people start massively taking advantage of this opportunity offered by politicians, the education system is in for a new and big upheaval. Because more than half of students are currently learning Russian as a second foreign language. But teachers of other foreign languages, such as German or French, are already in short supply. “360TV ZIĆneši” went to the school to understand the situation on the ground.
Russian language classes in Latvian schools still take place according to the usual schedule. But soon everything could change. Whether it will happen depends on the students themselves and their parents.
The new wording of the law provides that students from the fourth to the eighth grade will be able to start learning another second foreign language from the next school year. In order for this to happen, parents will have to write an application. Some of the eighth-grade students at the Riga Jugla Secondary School contacted by Žinnestu are really ready to give up the Russian language. But not for political reasons.
9th graders will also be able to opt out of the Russian language. In this case, the average grade will be calculated for almost five years of learning the Russian language in their primary school certificates. A month and a half before finishing elementary school, ninth graders are not going to give up the Russian language.
