One tree can absorb 21.7 kg of carbon dioxide in a year and will have processed about one ton of carbon dioxide by the age of 40.

In winter, the salt we sprinkle on the streets causes a lot of damage to the trees. What is the concentration of salt in three different places in Riga.

All three snow samples were tested in the laboratory for chlorides and sodium.

  • General’s relative embankment – 256 HI/162 Na
  • In Vermanes garden – 2.0 HI/1.01 Na
  • On Merķela Street near the “Inženiuer Street” stop – 104 HI/102 Na

There are no regulations regulating the concentration of salt for sprinkling on the roads.

According to international standards, the norms of chloride ions for water, for example in catchment basins, should not exceed 350 mg per liter.

No one from How Green? So green!” samples did not exceed it, but with trees it is not so easy, because salt is sprinkled regularly and it accumulates in the soil. High soil salinity limits nutrient uptake and can cause plant death.
