Slates can be handed over free of charge to poor and low-income households

--

Asbestos-containing construction materials are dangerous waste after their lifetime – they significantly harm the environment, polluting the air, soil and groundwater, and must be disposed of only in waste management landfills. VARAM’s campaign “Let the old asbestos roof go!” within the framework, poor and low-income households have the opportunity to get rid of their stocks of asbestos-containing slate free of charge.

One support applicant from one household can apply and submit for disposal no less than 0.2 tons (approximately 10 slate sheets) and no more than 3 tons (approximately 150 slate sheets) of asbestos-containing slate. The total amount of funding for the implementation of the support program is 350 thousand euros.

To apply for the support program, the applicant must fill out the application form, which is available at https://wastetoresources.varam.gov.lv together with the support conditions. The application can be submitted electronically by signing with a secure electronic signature and sending it to the VARAM e-mail address [email protected], sending the signed application by mail to the address Peldu iela 25, Riga, LV-1494 or submitting it in person. Submission of applications until May 31.

Important – on the day of submitting the application for support, the status of the poor or low-income household must be valid!

Confirmation for receiving support will be sent by e-mail within one month from the end of the application period, while it will be possible to receive the service within two months from the end of the application period.

VARAM reminds you that safety requirements must be followed when working with asbestos-containing materials. The work must be carried out in suitable clothing (disposable coverall, gloves, respirator P3, washable shoes) and the slate must not be broken, as dust is generated, which is dangerous for health and the environment.

Slate must not be buried in the ground, used for road embankment or other purposes. Asbestos-containing waste may be disposed of only in landfills that have received a permit from the State Environmental Service. Administrative responsibility is provided for improper management of asbestos-containing waste.
