A cool evening in May turned into heated emotions for several residents of the Bolderāja micro-district, because a “Mercedes” car unexpectedly caught fire in one of the yards of a multi-storey building. Some eyewitnesses also managed to capture the incident on their mobile phones.
“At At 22.00 I was already sleeping, but there was such a light in my window. I thought, Oh my God, who is there? The car is making noise. I looked – there were such flames, about the height of the second floor.”
When talking to other residents of the particular house, many of them heard about the incident for the first time. However, some were informed and told more about what happened.
“There was no explosion. [DP: Tad vienkārši auto aizdegās un viss?] Yes! [DP: Lieli dūmi bija?] There were flames, yes, but the firemen quickly arrived and extinguished them. [DP: Dūmi jums negāja logos?] Well, you could feel it a little,” says the resident of the house.
When asked if he heard anything, another resident of the neighborhood says: “I had gone for a walk with the dogs. [DP: Tātad redzējāt notikuma brīdi?] Of course I saw it burning. [DP: Bija tāds kā sprādziens vai kas?] It was, it was, but I think it was from the chemical fluids, maybe the battery exploded, from tosol or something. Today in the morning, I went to take a look – there, however, the whole engine was burnt. [DP: Jūsu rajonā pirmo reizi kas tāds notiek?] Yes, thank God! [DP: Jums šeit viss rāmi?] For us, everything is calm here, everything is normal.”

The owner of the car himself was not met in “Degpunkt” to find out his thoughts on the causes of the incident. When contacting the State Police, we found out that there is no reason to talk about malice at the moment – the battery was really to blame. Fortunately, no one was around at the time of the explosion.
