This week, the Department of Space and Mobility received the opinion of the special inspection on the technical condition of the traffic crossing over the railway on Altonavas Street. After studying the overpass structures and analytical calculations, it was decided that the existing traffic organization will be maintained on the overpass. Under the existing conditions, the overpass can continue to be operated for another two years, with regular inspections of its technical condition, informs the External Communication Department of the Riga Municipality Communications Board.

The opinion concluded that damage was found to the transmission vault.

Experts have indicated that the traffic overpass may be operated with the load of pedestrians and cyclists, and two-way traffic with a weight limit of up to five tons is also allowed. Public transport will continue to be organized along other routes.

The term of operation of the transmission is two years, during which regular observations of the technical condition of the transmission must be carried out. Also, several short-term measures should be taken in the near future to improve traffic safety – the fastenings of the railway catenary at the facade on the side of the Zasulauka station should be eliminated, the construction mesh should be installed in the area of the railway track, and the damaged concrete of the supports should be cured and repaired.

The municipality is recommended to demolish the existing structures and build a new overpass.

The bridge is located on the planned “Rail Baltica” route, during the construction of which the outdated overpass was supposed to be demolished. The municipality has also asked the Ministry of Transport to provide information on further plans related to the transfer.

The municipality has already reported that due to a possible danger, on the night of Friday, April 5, in Torņakalnė, transport and pedestrian traffic was closed on the viaduct over the railway on Altonavas street, in the section from Tēriņu street to O. Vācieša street, but after receiving the initial assessment, pedestrian and bicycle traffic was restored the next day movement, as well as two-way traffic with a weight limit of up to five tons.
