As the chairman of the National Electronic Media Council, Ivars Āboliņš, explained on social networks, the company “Balticom” suffered a cyber attack this morning, as a result of which the company lost control over television rebroadcasts.

During the cyber attack, instead of all the television programs rebroadcast by “Balticom”, Russian propaganda content – the Kremlin’s May 9 parade – could be seen on the air.

According to the information available to NEPLP, the infrastructure of the “Balticom” operator has not been compromised. The cyber attack happened to a content delivery partner outside of Latvia, and “Balticom” rebroadcast this changed content. “Clarification of the situation continues,” says Āboliņš.

He visited the TV24 program “Press Club” on Thursday and commented on the situation Kirill Solovyov Founder of the IT security company “Possible Security”.

He points out: “It is important to understand that we have been in a cyber war with Russia for at least the eleventh year. It happens all the time. From the technical side, no information has been released as to exactly how this has been achieved. You need to understand that it is not always technology, there is such a thing as internal threats, maybe a person.”

The IT expert also believes that the parties involved reacted sensibly by “pulling the knob” and stopping it immediately. He also doesn’t think it could have been a computer virus. Rather, everything happened very deliberately.

Likewise, K. Solovyov reminds that something similar happened before the 11th or 12th Saeima elections – Draugiem.lv was hacked, where Putin’s face was displayed and the Russian anthem was played.

Is this something to worry about? “There’s more to worry about than invisible operations.”

This incident should be evaluated even positively, because it will unite the society. For those who themselves know which side they are on, everything is said to be clear.
