On May 9, 2024 – Friday, May 10, the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management (IEVF) of Riga Technical University (RTU) will host a guest lecture “Civil defense in the event of a military threat”. Security and resilience expert Vitalijs Raksiņš will share his knowledge in the lecture.

He points out that questions about individual actions in the event of a military threat are often heard in the public space. «This lecture will provide a structured overview of operational algorithms in a military threat situation. These issues are relevant not only in Latvia, but in all the Nordic countries,” says V. Raksiņš, adding that the lecture will address issues that also affect the continuity and stability of operations, which are new elements of crisis management.

Anyone interested who does not yet have in-depth knowledge of civil defense is invited to attend the lecture. Visitors will gain basic knowledge of civil defense during wartime, including using the experience of Ukraine as an example.

The lecture will address the following questions:

  • Ukrainian war experience (evacuation, reporting, action algorithms);

  • object protection, business continuity and initial conclusions from Russia’s war in Ukraine;

  • Latvian regulatory framework on civil defense and business continuity during military threats and war.

The lecture will take place in person from 14.00 until 15.30 at RTU Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management, Kalnciema Street 6, auditorium 419.

“Education promotes a sense of responsibility and civic will. People are aware that their actions can affect not only themselves, but also others, and thus they are ready to act to protect the society,” says associate professor Māris Ziemelis of the Management and Safety Institute of the RTU Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management, the organizer of this knowledge exchange.

Since 2006, the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management has been implementing the second-level professional higher education study program “Fire Safety and Civil Protection”, which is studied by officials of the State Fire and Rescue Service. The study course “Civil defense” is also being implemented for all RTU students, and from January 1, 2024, the Institute of Management and Security has also been established, with the faculty assuming knowledge leadership in the field of civil defense and security.

The mission of the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management of RTU is to prepare internationally recognized, highly qualified specialists in the field of economics and business, to promote the growth opportunities of scientists and teaching staff and to provide competitive, career- and well-being-promoting multi-level education, moreover, to achieve this by using the latest technologies and innovations, creating a modern, professional a development-promoting working environment for students, teaching staff and faculty employees.
