The politician reasoned that significant challenges for the Latvian economy are currently caused by geopolitical risks, under the influence of which it is more difficult to attract investments. Despite this, the growth of Latvia’s economy is predicted to be above the EU average.
Dombrovskis emphasized that Latvia should use the available EU funding as fully as possible to promote the economy. In his assessment, the acquisition of funding from the EU Recovery Fund in Latvia is progressing successfully, but there is a certain delay in the acquisition of other EU funds, and their acquisition needs to be accelerated.
Invited to evaluate the Latvian Ministry of Finance’s offer to amend the Fiscal Discipline Law and increase the permissible deficit threshold, Dombrovskis said that changes in fiscal discipline requirements are planned throughout the EU from 2025, so it would be wise for Latvia to align its norms with the EU’s common plans in a timely manner.
Speaking about his political plans, Dombrovskis said that he currently has no ambitions to run for the post of EC president, where the European People’s Party supports the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen, but he would like to take the post of EU commissioner for a third term “if the opportunity arises”.
