It is regrettable to admit that the value system of many, especially young people, has degraded, Rēzekne-Aglona diocese bishop Jānis Bulis said on Saturday at the solemn service of the Republic of Latvia’s Independence Day in Rēzekne’s Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Cathedral.

If a person does not have a strong inner spiritual support, he will not be able to support his family, his nation, his country, and he will not be able to give his life, if he has to do it, so that Latvia does not fall under the yoke of occupation again, said Bulis.

He pointed out that Latvia needs its people not to fight against each other, thus creating division in the society, but to fight together for the development and prosperity of the country.

The bishop emphasized that the freedom that Latvia regained 34 years ago is one of the greatest human values for which we should be grateful. At the same time, he invited us to look at what our freedom looks like today, and to think whether we sometimes forget that freedom is only freedom if another person is not suffering next to it.

Therefore, Bulis in his holiday sermon encouraged to think not only about yourself, but also about the interests of the people around you, without pushing away the different and the foreign.

As reported, today, the day of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia, marks the 34th anniversary, since on May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council adopted the declaration “On the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia”.
