From the beginning, the parking lot was designed to use the “Park&Ride” system. So, entering the parking lot and parking your car, then using two more trips on public transport, you could use the parking lot at a 100% discount. So – free of charge. It was meant to relieve the center of Riga from cars. As of May 1, all of this is canceled. So how useful was it?

Kristīne, a resident of Riga, who met her in the parking lot, confirms that in the parking lot owned by the municipality and managed by SIA “Rīgas nami”, there have been problems not only with the elevator, but also with the entry and exit barriers for a long time. A neglected case study.

At the end of 2012, the first parking lot or “Park&Ride” parking lot was opened with pomp in the capital. However, the vast complex built for nearly 700 vehicles was used less than 300 times in the first year as a Park&Ride. Instead of a success story, there was only a chick.

The idea was not abandoned. “Hipark Systems” SIA, the merchant who won the procurement, is trying to revive the parking lot.

In the meantime, the municipality is evaluating possible solutions, how to more effectively develop parking lots and mobility points in the city territory, as foreseen by the 2014 development plan for the parking lot system section and the Riga territory planning. “2025. the development of an Action Plan for the implementation of parking lots and mobility points is planned. At the same time, the municipality is carrying out design work for the construction of 15 mobility points near the railway stations in Riga, in order to ensure joint connections of various modes of transport, offering convenient and alternative ways of moving and reducing the need to use private road transport,” adds Tatjana Smirnova, representative of the municipality of the city of Riga.
