At least 25 people have been killed and more than 10 injured after a passenger bus plunged into a gorge in northern Peru, local authorities said Monday.

The disaster happened on Sunday evening in the Cajamarca region of the Andes mountains when the bus plunged off a bumpy dirt road into a gorge about 200 meters deep, a local official said.
The bus with more than 50 passengers stopped on the river bank after the fall and some of the people inside were swept away by the river current.
Rescuers and firefighters arrived at the scene and the injured were taken to the hospital.
The municipality of Selendin declared two days of mourning.
Accidents often occur on Peruvian roads due to speeding, poor road conditions, lack of road signs and disregard for traffic rules.
Last year, more than 3,100 people died in traffic accidents in the country.
