From today, the treatment of this plant with chemicals, or spraying, will begin in the parks, meadows and other areas affected by Latvians in Smiltene district, informs the communication and marketing specialist of the municipality, Madara Mūrniece-Krūmiņa.
The spraying of herbicides in the areas affected by Latvians will take place according to the weather conditions.
Treatment of latvians with herbicides is used in areas that are not near water bodies. Using this method of combating the plant, it is observed that the Latvian population is decreasing.
Areas where spraying will take place will be marked with warning signs. The specific areas may only be visited when the signs have been removed.
The works in the town of Smiltenes will be carried out by SIA “Smiltenes NKUP”, and in the territories of the parishes – trained plant protection product operators. In case of uncertainty, residents should call the manager of works, Evija Rakštele, on 29 161 694.
Until April 30 of this year, the residents of Smiltene region – individuals and legal entities – can apply for municipal support to combat the latvian weevil. To apply for support, the area affected by Latvians must be no less than 0.1 hectare in area. This unit of land must be registered in the invasive plant species distribution database of the State Plant Protection Service’s State Information System for Cultivation Monitoring, and the applicant must not have real estate debt.
