At 1:00 p.m., the laureates of “Latvijas Goda familia 2024” and “Our grandparents – the pride of Latvia” will be honored. Various educational and creative workshops will be held throughout the zoo, inviting you to be healthy, smart, resilient, strong, beautiful, sweet, calm, patient, agile and fun.

Along with serious things like financial and health literacy, visitors will be able to make masks, solve mind games, paint, test their dexterity and patience in physical activities, as well as capture the moment in a special photo corner. The “Lupila” baby crawling championship will take place in the Children’s Playground of the Zoo, in which the smallest zoo visitors will participate.

Everyone will be able to participate in the photo orientation competition. Unlike the others, in these, not the fastest, but the sharpest will win. Since there is a principle in the Zoo – the slower you are, the more you will see, then this task will be a great test and challenge to observe everything around and notice. The orientation guide will be available at the information tent of the event at the Zoo entrance.

On May 1, upon presentation of the “Honorary Family” card, entrance tickets for large families will cost only 13 euros. Several well-known companies will take care of the visitors’ well-being, which will offer a meal for different tastes in a special catering area. The program of the event and the possibility to buy a ticket for a large family can be found here.

Zoo Large families

This year, the smallest monkeys of the Riga Zoo – the Eastern pygmy callitrix – have taken care of a brilliant participation in the event for large families. These long-legged primates can be seen in the Tropical House.

On April 14, three whole babies joined the cheerful, active and caring family of 10 children. This is truly a unique event, as this species, like many other callitrixes, produces one to two young. On the other hand, three babies are very rare, and usually in such cases one offspring does not survive. The monkey family of the Riga Zoo has a lot of experience in raising babies – maybe that’s why it is perfectly able to take care of the youngest triplets. More about Dwarf Callitrix here.

There is also an addition to the Geldi Kalimiko family – a baby was born on March 8. Although one that is usual for this species of calymiko, but a very welcome offspring. This species is recorded in the Red Book of the World as a sensitive species (Vulnerable), and we also participate in the international European program for keeping and breeding Geldi Kalimiko EEP. Even this baby, black as coal, currently recognizes the back of an adult family member as the best and safest place. The family can be viewed in the Kangaroo House. More about Geldi kalimiko here.

In nature, callitrix are found in South America and live in a family group. Both parents stay in it together with their offspring from previous litters. Very soon after birth, the care and carrying of the cubs is handed over to the male. A little later, the older brothers and sisters also get involved in the care of the offspring.
