April 29 – May 3, 2024 at At 11:00 a.m., the final of the erudition competition for students “BIO-GO-Higher” will be held in the auditorium of the Riga Technical University (RTU) “Domus Auditorialis”, Zunda krastmala 8. In the competition, students compete for the main prize – a trip to Germany and the opportunity to try their hand at developing biomaterials at the Biomaterials Center of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

12 teams from Latvia’s leading secondary schools and gymnasiums will meet in the final.

The competition for 10th and 11th grade students is being organized for the fourth time by the Baltic Biomaterials Excellence Center (BBCE) to strengthen students’ knowledge in engineering and natural sciences, as well as increase their interest in the use of implant materials in medicine. “The young people who participate in the competition are the future engineers, doctors and scientists of Latvia. Knowing where the participants of the competition continue their education after graduating from high school or gymnasium, we are pleased to see that many of them choose chemistry, chemical technology, medicine, pharmacy, biotechnology and bioengineering, medical engineering, environmental engineering, as well as mechanics, architecture, construction, computer science , IT, telecommunications and other studies,» says the organizer of the competition, leading researcher of the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering of the RTU Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technologies, Arita Dubnika.

56 teams applied for participation in the competition, the 20 strongest of which started the battle in four remote rounds. The tasks of the competition were prepared and evaluated by scientists from BBCE’s partner organization – RTU, Rīga Stradiņa University (RSU), Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (OSI) and RSU Institute of Stomatology. The team of students who will receive the highest number of points after completing the tasks of all rounds will win the main prize on May 3.

In previous years, teams from RTU Engineering High School, Sigulda State Gymnasium and Cēsi State Gymnasium have won the competition.

The progress of «BIO-GO-Higher» is supported by companies and organizations interested in promoting STEM education. The sponsors of this year’s competition are SIA «Kinetics Nail Systems», SIA «SpirulinaNord», Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia, «Mēness Aptieka», AS «Madara Cosmetics», SIA «Adrona», SIA «ANIMA LAB», SIA «Orto Partners» , AS «Strautmann Group», SIA «STENDERS», AS «Tērvetes AL» Brewery, SIA «Armgate», SIA «Baltic Candles Ltd», SIA «Skrīveru saldumi», SIA «Biotecha Latvia», State Blood Donor Center, AS « GRINDEKS”, brand “Kārums”, SIA “Kino bize”, SIA “Tarzāns”, SIA “Apgāds Zvaigzne ABC” and SIA “PIPARMĀTRA LV”.

BBCE (GA No. 857287) is an ambitious scientific capacity building project that promotes excellence in the research and development of new biomaterials for bone regeneration, facial, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics and other fields. The project is implemented by RTU, RSU, RSU Institute of Stomatology, OSI, AO Research Institute in Davos, Switzerland, and the Biomaterials Center of the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. 15 million for its implementation. euros allocated from the EU program “Horizon 2020” and 15 million euro is provided by the state, ERDF and project partners.
