Despite the fact that the official motorcycle season will start only on these holidays, this year two motorcycle drivers have already died in road traffic accidents involving motorcycles and 36 people have been injured, therefore the State Police (VP) and the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) call on motorcyclists to take care of your safety in time and before leaving, observe various safety measures. Knowledge of first aid and the skills to provide it in life-critical moments are equally important.

The statistics registered by the State Police show that this year, from the beginning of the year to April 24 inclusive, there have been 46 road traffic accidents involving motorcycle drivers, 36 people were injured in these accidents, and two motorcycle drivers died. Last year, in the same period of time, there were 36 accidents in which 24 people were injured and two died. Taking into account the accidents that happened this year, the operational services remind about various safety tips that must be taken into account by the motorcyclists themselves, as well as by the surrounding road users.

Safety first

Before starting the new season, motorcycle drivers must make sure of the technical condition of the vehicle. We also invite motorcyclists to brush up on their driving skills before setting off, and we also invite you not to overestimate your ability to drive a vehicle. The most important thing is to choose a driving speed suitable for the road surface, in order to be able to prevent a dangerous situation if necessary. You must not forget to take care of your own safety by choosing appropriate and high-quality clothing and equipment for driving a motorcycle, which can protect you from getting more serious injuries in the event of a road traffic accident.

Other road users must also be prepared for the return of motorcyclists in traffic. It should be remembered that, compared to a car, a motorcycle moves faster in road traffic and is therefore more difficult to be seen by other road users. Taking into account that the season has just started and drivers are used to participating in road traffic without motorcycle transport, we remind you – driver, be especially careful and make sure of safety before making maneuvers!

Injuries – mostly severe

It is a harsh reality, but during the warm season, every day the EMS medics provide assistance to approximately two to three motorcyclists who have suffered serious injuries in road traffic accidents. Most of the injuries are combined, that is, even several body parts are severely injured at the same time – clavicle, multiple facial bones, base of the skull, open leg and arm fractures, hemorrhaging in the head, damage to the spinal vertebrae, severe internal organ injuries. For the victim, these types of injuries have lasting consequences on his future quality of life. Unfortunately, in the most tragic accidents, the victim dies at the scene of the accident.

First aid is important

In order to reduce the consequences of possible injuries and save the victim’s life, it is necessary to act immediately! Providing first aid at the scene of an accident can be crucial to a person’s life. Not to be afraid and to dare, to ask for help, so that life can be saved by one’s own or joint efforts. If the victim is unconscious or bleeding from under the helmet, the protective helmet should be removed, sparing the victim’s neck. In cases where the victim is conscious, care should be taken as there is a possibility of trauma to the spine, so it is recommended not to move the victim unless his life is in danger. Safety and caution require action, not standing by as a bystander. While the medics are on the way to the scene, everyone can take care of the victim and perform life-saving measures, if necessary, such as performing resuscitation measures or stopping bleeding.

The operational services call on motorcyclists, drivers and other road users to be responsible, cautious and to remember mutual respect on the road as well. One second of carelessness and recklessness can cost a person’s life!
