Jelgavnieki cleaned in the area of Būriņu road, where even several cleaning places were applied for, in the area of Tērvetes street, Smiltnieku street, Kalnciema road, line 1, Sieramuiža, on the banks of the Driksa river and Svēte river, in the area of the Dobele highway and on Zvejnieku street.

For some Jelgav residents, the Great Cleanup, cleaning up a corner of the city, has already become a tradition. Jelgavniece Vita lives with her family near Būriņu road and has been regularly collecting garbage along the side of the road for more than 10 years. “When walking everyday, it is not pleasant to see different garbage, so I try to pick up garbage not only on cleaning day. The joy is that less waste is left every year,” admits Vita. Along with Vita’s family, the inhabitants of other surrounding houses also helped along the path of the cages.

Jelgava Technical School Eco School coordinator teacher Evija Preimane, together with the students and teachers of the technical school, cleaned up the banks of the Svēte river today. They were also joined by Jelgav residents, who chose the place according to the marked taluk on the map of the Great Taluk. “We chose to organize this area because this year the theme of our eco-school is water. Today, we collect not only the garbage left by people, but after the floods, the river also brought various debris to the shore,” says the teacher.

City council member Vilis Levčenoks also visited several volunteers and thanked them for their work. It should be noted that part of the Jelgav residents already carried out the cleanup in the previous days.

Kristīne Stukina, the coordinator of the big cleanup in Jelgava, the production director of SIA “Zemgales EKO”, says that this year 35 cleanup places were officially applied for in Jelgava and about 1000 bags were distributed to cleanup workers in Jelgava. She reveals that additional bags have been brought to some of the collectors today. “Today, in the afternoon, the waste collected during the Great Cleanup has already been delivered to the household waste landfill “Brakški” from the officially registered cleanup sites. It is planned that the garbage collected by the cleaners will be taken away today and tomorrow, so that they do not accumulate on the sides of the road,” says K. Stukina.

It should be noted that a unique underwater clean-up is taking place in Jelgava today until 5 p.m. – divers are cleaning the bed of the Driksa river. Work is still ongoing there.

Thank you to every cleaner for their involvement in cleaning and beautifying the environment!
