The situation when a mother comes with her daughter to a doctor-gynecologist is great. In addition, if you come to the doctor not when you already have complaints that something hurts, that there is an unwanted pregnancy or an infection and suspicions about it, but you come simply to talk. It’s wonderful, but it’s the minority of cases. But if we try to understand what young people know about their health, about sexual and reproductive health, then there is an excellent tool that we can use – it is a study initiated by the Ministry of Health and implemented by Riga Stradiņš University on sexual and reproductive health of the population of Latvia.

“There is a lot of data, but what would be important to talk about. For example, in the age group 15-24 years, 27% do not use any concept during the first sexual intercourse – this is a lot, it is almost a third. These people did not imagine that they could be at risk of sexually transmitted infections or unplanned pregnancy. In this age group, the most frequently used methods, in 40% of cases, are unsafe methods – interrupted sexual intercourse or no methods of protection,” says the gynecologist about the harsh reality.

Weiss points out that all this does not reflect good knowledge and good health literacy in this matter. “This lack of health education, which we have had since 2005, when these important things about one’s health have to be integrated into various other subjects, we need to start talking about it.

Now the creators of educational content have been given the task to develop more specifically this program, when and what is told at which age, but it has been launched quite large. As Weiss points out, an entire generation has already grown up with knowledge that’s good if it comes from family, and good if it’s objective. Sometimes even parents are not enough to tell their child.

The host of the program Pēteris Apinis reminds that in 2005 the Minister of Industry was Kārlis Šadurskis, who signed the fact that throw away health education from Latvian school programs.

Weiss points out that the situation is sad, because young people have knowledge about this topic collected , young people often get information from the Internet, for example about contraception, the question is what is available there and what comes first. One of the top methods can advertised – Interrupted intercourse, which is basically a historical method that is not reliable. Therefore, the question of how to reach these young people with modern information that is safe for them is urgent.
