Soldiers of the National Defense Service have learned the specialty of drone operator

On Thursday, April 25, Defense Minister Andris Spruds visited the Ādaži training ground, where he awarded the first soldiers of the National Defense Service of the Air Force of the National Armed Forces who successfully completed the unmanned aircraft course and obtained the specialty of drone operator.

“In the coming years, the national armed forces will have to ensure the introduction of increasingly large-scale modern technologies – drones, electronic warfare systems and artificial intelligence – into the armaments in order to develop smart defense. Already now, soldiers of our national defense service can fully learn the specialty of drone operator. The sooner we learn the technological skills necessary for defense, the more successfully we will be able to move towards intelligent defense,” said Defense Minister Andris Spruds.

It has already been reported that in January of this year, 125 soldiers of the National Defense Service started their service in the National Defense Service, serving in the National Armed Forces Headquarters Battalion in Riga, the Air Force in Lielvārde and the 2nd Vidzeme Brigade of the National Guard.

Also, the Ministry of Defense invites young people to voluntarily apply to the national defense service by June 15 of this year, so that the 11-month long training will start in January 2025. It is planned to enlist 210 persons in this recruitment.

The 11-month service of the National Defense Service in January 2025 in the unit of the National Armed Forces will be carried out in three service locations: in the Headquarters Battalion of the National Armed Forces, in the Air Force and in the 2nd Vidzeme Brigade of the National Guard.

At the same time, by June 15 of this year, up to 200 persons are expected to be admitted to the five-year service in the National Guard and up to 50 persons to the reserve officer program for university and college students in a military educational institution or a unit of the National Armed Forces.

We would like to remind you that the monthly compensation for daily expenses is planned in the amount of 600 euros for a soldier who volunteered for the service and will serve 11 months in the National Armed Forces unit, while the monthly compensation for daily expenses of those conscripted into the national defense service is planned in the amount of 300 euros. Retirement compensation after the end of service – 1100 euros. The mentioned amounts are net, or the amounts that the service provider will receive “on hand”.
