at the concert dedicated to the Independence Day of the Republic of Latvia Latvian (from) sounds orchestra Riga the artistic director Valdis Butāns has conceived several compositions by contemporary Latvian composers dedicated to the splendor of Latvian nature and the memory of prominent personalities.

Anna Veismane’s new work for narrator and brass band will be premiered at this concert Sea. Elements, in which the musically melodious flow will be complemented by Aspazija’s poetry readings and their interpretations by actress Guna Zariņa. The composer says about the opus created this year: “The center of the work is the sea: cosmological birth of the sea, grandeur, mystery and graceful tenderness. I supplemented the sea depicted by Aspazija with elements of comprehensive and powerful concepts. Aspazija’s poetry and the unimaginably wide possibilities of the brass band inspired me to look for bright characters and timbral colors – from light playfulness to a destructive, elemental mass of sounds. Aspazija’s poem is composed in the score and it is arranged in a different way than in the original. After previous collaboration with the actress Guna Zariņa, I know that Guna has a musical feeling and an ability to add her own own interpretation, which is always organic and balanced.”

Several pieces included in the program were once written for the orchestra Riga musicians and performed at the festival dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian state Three stars. For example, the instrumental work of Ilona Bregė was created in 2018 Music in memory of Kárlas Saale, the inspiration for the creation of which was found in the works of Kārļas Zaales – the Freedom Monument and the Brothers’ Grave Memorial Ensemble, which are important for Latvia and the Latvian people. The opus has four parts: Mother – protector of the family, Ancestral soldiers, Wounded rider and Mother Latvia (with fallen sons).

A year later, in 2019, the orchestra Riga the repertoire was supplemented by new works by Gundegas Šmite and Krista Auznieks. Gundega Šmite’s music Three paintings in the forest is the composer’s letter to Latvia in the form of memory postcards. The three parts of the piece – Green Mist, Cathedral of the Winds and Ice crystal games – the composer herself created lines of poetry that contain her personal memories and feelings. On the other hand, Krists Auznieks in his composition Lights up invites you to turn to the light, dedicating music to people coming into the world and leaving it, to the change of generations and to their mutual exchange of experience and energy.

After a long break, the orchestra Riga the music of Jura Karlsson will be played at the concert. A composition The voice of life born in silence once dedicated to conductor Roland Hensgen and his brass orchestra in Luxembourg. The composer wrote the piece’s motto on the sheet music: Peace wakes up in force and sings… Orchestra Riga the cooperation with Juri Karlsson will be repeated in the very near future, as the composer plans to dedicate new music to the orchestra at the end of this year, during the week of public holidays.
