Last Saturday, a dog sports competition was held at the Lizum stadium, organized by the Alūksne kennel society “Remis” with the support of the Lizum parish administration.

36 athletes from seven counties took part in the competition, and it was held in five groups: the youngest (up to 46 years), the oldest (46+), amateurs, a small dog group and a “child with a dog” group. The competition took place in three stages, where each participant had to complete obstacle courses of different complexity with their four-legged friend, as well as prove that the dog listens to them and fulfills all the set elements.

Agris Naglis, chairman of the board of the association “Remis” and chief judge of the competition, commented on the performance of the participants: “By our standards, this was a well-attended competition, as there are rarely such a large number of participants. Although this was the second competition this year, it can still be considered as the opening of the season, as the first one took place in winter. For several years now, we have cooperated with the Lizum parish administration, and we appreciate their support. The athletes were very active, no one was overpowered, and everyone got the place they deserved. Later, after sitting down and analyzing the results, it was possible to conclude that quite a few participants had become lazy during the winter. After the winter it is always more difficult to start a sports life, and hopefully it will improve, but the results were expected to be better. One conclusion – the athletes have not properly prepared for the new season.”

Marina Ivanova, a white woman, also participated in the amateur group with her Labrador retriever Tiffany, who will be two years old in July. It was her dog’s first competition in a foreign stadium. “Our first competition was in January at the Alūksne stadium, where we study. In a foreign stadium, the dog is more stressed. We went to the competition for experience, to know what the mistakes are and what we need to work on more, and we still have to work on everything. We will continue to participate in competitions. We will continue to gain experience and improve our skills. But to participate in such competitions, you need to work with the dog regularly and a lot. I need to work more on physical fitness with my dog,” says M. Ivanova.

During the season, athletes are given the opportunity to compete in 13 stages, the next of which will take place very soon – already on May 11.

“We really have a lot of stages. With short breaks, competitions are held almost every other Saturday throughout the summer. We start in February, but the season ends for us at the end of September, and it really takes time and patience. By the way, the 18th competition is planned in Litene, and it can be visited by all interested people and dog friends. We are happy to receive and provide any support in organizing the competition. Anyone who is interested in the results of the competition can view them on the website of the “Remis” association,” says A. Naglis.
