Writer, publicist and screenwriter Livs would celebrate his 100th anniversary on August 31 this year.

“Liv has written stories, books and screenplays, which have become valuable for those who are close to the sea and life near it. In his works, the writer described seaside life, seafaring traditions, sailors’ stories. Liepāja was described,” the municipality justifies honoring the writer.

For more than ten years, in order to promote interest in the writer’s literary heritage and support the creative process in writing, the “People of the Coast” writing awards have been presented once a year in Liepāja.

This year, the theme of the nomination “The best literary work of young authors” is Liepāja. A theme includes any creative and imaginative thoughts, events or mere associations it evokes.

You can apply for the competition from 10.-12. grade school students, students and young authors up to the age of 35 from all over Latvia, whose fiction prose works have not yet been published in books.

For the nomination “The best prose work of original literature”, prose works published between July 1, 2023 and July 1 of this year are invited to be submitted.

The competition jury will assess whether the submitted books meet the goals of the competition, whether they bring up the themes of Latvianness and patriotism, the reflection of events and opinions prevailing in society, and the bright characters of the inhabitants of the seaside.

Application for the competition until July 1.

Works in both nominations can be submitted by filling out an electronic application form: the best literary work of young authors, the best prose work of original literature in the Latvian language.

The “People of the Coast” award ceremony will be held on September 12.
